Employee Spotlight: Bernie Dolan, Software Engineer

by Emily Huh

Meet Bernie Dolan (he/him) in our newest MobileCoin spotlight! Discover who Bernie is, how he came to work at MobileCoin, and what his superpower would be.

What’s your position at MobileCoin?

I’m a Software Engineer at MobileCoin working on the MobileCoin Android SDK.

How did you find your way into the world of cryptocurrency?

I remember hearing about crypto when Bitcoin first became a thing, but I didn’t get into it at first. But when I was in college, Dogecoin became a thing and I thought it was funny, so I mined a bunch. At the time it was worthless, but it ended up reaching almost $0.80 last year. Even after, I didn’t really get into buying and trading crypto or the communities surrounding it.

How did you find out about MobileCoin?

My friend Brian started working at MobileCoin awhile back. I was still in school at the time, but after I finished, he told me that they might be looking for Java developers. After meeting a few of the people there and hearing about the mission of MobileCoin, I was pretty much sold.

What’s your favorite thing about working at MobileCoin?

It’s easily the people and the culture they create. We’re allowed to actually be people here and not just employees. Having mostly worked at larger companies previously, it’s very refreshing.

What excites you most about the future of MobileCoin?

I’ve always cared a lot about privacy. Every day this tends to feel more like a losing battle. Privacy-focused alternatives to the things we all use daily always come with some trade-offs. Whether you’re talking about messaging, social media, or basically anything, everybody just wants to use the most convenient and/or most popular thing. MobileCoin isn’t the first to create encrypted payments, but the user experience is just as good if not better than the most popular unencrypted alternatives. I think freedom and privacy of transaction is one of the most important things anybody could have and, for the first time, it’s as simple as downloading an app.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

Outside of work I do a lot of software too. I have dozens of projects that I switch between working on from time to time. In addition to that, I do a lot of digital and electronic design and prototyping. I especially enjoy working on projects that bridge the boundary between the two. But, aside from personal projects, I enjoy solving Rubik’s Cubes (and other similar puzzles) and playing games with my friends.

What would be your personal motto?

Question everything.

Flashback to when you were 10-years-old. What did you want to be when you grow up?

Back then I liked playing video games a lot. I thought that if I could become a video game tester, I could get paid to do it. But over time my interests broadened, and by the time I was in high school, I was making my own video games. At this point, I think I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Easily teleportation, but I’d want to be able to bring stuff with me.

Thanks Bernie for sharing and we’re so glad to have you on the team!
